When someone searches for the first time what ayahuasca is, they usually find two extremes: clinical descriptions that reduce it to a psychoactive substance, or sensationalist stories that surround it with unattainable mysticism. The reality is in a different place, much closer to the earth and the tradition of the people who have used it for centuries as a healing tool.
Ayahuasca (also known as yagé in Colombia and other regions) is a sacred drink made from the cooking of plants native to the Amazon. Its use is part of the traditional medicine of indigenous communities in Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Brazil, and has been recognized as Cultural Heritage in countries such as Peru because of its profound significance for the native peoples.
In this article we share with you an honest look at what ayahuasca is from the tradition, how a healing retreat with real accompaniment works, and what you can expect if you are considering this experience.
Ayahuasca From Traditional Medicine: Much More Than a Plant
The word ayahuasca comes from Quechua and translates as «rope of the spirits» or «vine of the soul». This translation is not accidental: for the communities that have worked with it for generations, ayahuasca is a way into oneself, a tool that allows access to levels of consciousness that remain hidden in everyday life.
From the perspective of traditional medicine, ayahuasca is not consumed to «see things» or to live a recreational experience. It is worked with as part of an integral healing process that involves the body, mind and spirit. The facilitator or taita who guides the ceremony is not simply someone who administers a drink: he or she is a traditional doctor with years of preparation, diet and commitment to the medicine.
At El Hospital del Alma, located in Villa Rosita (Atlántico, Colombia), we understand ayahuasca as our grandparents understood it: a medicine that accompanies the person in his or her process of discovery and inner liberation. We do not see it as a product or as a tourist experience. We see it as a path.
How does an Ayahuasca Healing Retreat work?
If you're researching healing retreats, it's natural to wonder what actually happens during one. Here's how a serious, responsible, wellness-focused retreat works for each person.
The Space: Nature, Silence and Containment
A genuine healing retreat takes place in a natural environment, away from noise and urban distractions. In our case, the farm where the processes take place is surrounded by trees and vegetation, an environment that favors the connection with oneself and the tranquility necessary for the inner work.
It is not a hotel or a resort. It is a space energetically prepared to receive people who have made the decision to initiate a process of personal transformation.
The Team: Who's With You and Why It Matters
One of the most important aspects of a healing retreat is who is in charge. In a responsible center, the process is guided by a taita or facilitator with real experience in medicine, not someone who took a few weeks course.
At El Hospital del Alma, the team is led by Taita Mares Jesús, a traditional doctor with more than a decade of experience in travel medicine. The accompaniment includes facilitators who conduct preliminary interviews, follow-up during the process and post-ceremony support. The entire team works with a personalized approach, because each person arrives with his or her own story.
The Process: Before, During and After
Before the ceremony: A personal interview is conducted to learn about the patient's situation, resolve doubts and sign an informed consent form. Relevant health aspects are also reviewed and indications on food and preparation are given.
During the ceremony: the taita guides the process with chants, prayers and permanent attention to each participant. The groups are small -maximum twelve people in retreats, three in internment- which allows a truly personalized attention. The ceremony is not a show: it is an intimate space for inner work.
After the ceremony: Word circles are held to integrate the experience, individual conversations and a closing guided by the taita. For those who come for a weekend retreat, the accompaniment continues at a distance with personalized follow-up.
The Difference between a Healing Retreat and a Recreational Experience
This point is fundamental and deserves an honest reflection. In recent years, the growing interest in ayahuasca has generated an offer that ranges from serious centers with decades of tradition to improvised spaces that treat the medicine as a consumer product.
A healing retreat differs from a recreational experience in several specific ways:
Intention. In a healing retreat, the person comes with an inner disposition toward transformation. They do not come to «try something new» or to look for visual effects. They come because they feel a calling or a genuine need to work on themselves.
Accompaniment. A healing center offers real follow-up before, during and after the process. It is not a one-night event with no context or continuity.
Preparation of the facilitator. A taita or traditional doctor has dedicated years - often decades - to his or her training with medicine. His knowledge does not come from a manual but from direct experience and the guidance of his own teachers.
The size of the group. The centers that prioritize healing work with small groups in order to be able to attend to each person individually. Massive spaces, where dozens of people are received without real accompaniment, respond to a commercial logic that is not compatible with a healing process.
At El Hospital del Alma, our processes are specialized: small groups, private ceremonies, personalized attention. It is not a model for the masses. It is a space for those who are ready to live their process with depth and responsibility.
What Can You Expect from a Healing Retreat? No Promises, Transparency
If there is one thing that defines an honest healing center, it is transparency about results. And the truth is this: no one can promise you what will happen during your process. That's not how healing works.
What we can tell you is the following:
The person who enters will not be the same. Traditional medicine operates within, by and for each person. The process of discovery is your own. The results do not depend on the facilitator or the center: they depend largely on you, your willingness and your commitment to your own path.
What we do offer is a safe space, an experienced team, an integral accompaniment and a natural environment that favors inner work. We offer a path and the necessary company to walk it. What you discover on that path belongs to you.
This approach may be different from what you will find on other sites that promise «guaranteed healing» or «immediate results». We prefer to be honest: deep transformation is a process, not an event. And that process requires time, commitment and, above all, the personal decision to walk within.
Feeling the Call? The First Step is to Get Informed
If you made it this far, it is likely that something in you is resonating with these words. Research is an important and valuable step: understanding what ayahuasca is, knowing how a healing retreat works, and distinguishing a serious space from an improvised one allows you to make informed decisions.
