Around yagé and ayahuasca an imaginary has been woven full of exaggerated promises, inherited fears and descriptions that have little to do with what really happens in a ceremony. Those who are curious deserve clear information, without embellishments or dramatic warnings.
In this article we separate some of the most frequent myths from the experience as we understand it at The Hospital of the Soul: a space of accompaniment, not a magical promise. We do not seek to convince anyone. We want those who decide to approach us to do so with understanding and without mistaken expectations.
Before we begin: what is yagé?
Yagé - known in other traditions as ayahuasca - is a plant preparation used for centuries by communities in the Amazon basin within a ceremonial and accompaniment context. It is neither a recreational substance nor a consumer product: it is a traditional medicine that is taken within a guided process, with meaning and care.
Understanding this is the first step in dismantling most of the myths. Most of the confusion comes from looking at yagé out of context.
Myth 1: «Yagé is a drug to have spectacular visions».»
The reality
The ceremony does not seek to produce lights, colors or flashy effects. The emphasis is not on what is seen, but on the internal process that accompanies it. To reduce the experience to a visual spectacle is to lose sight of its meaning: it is a work of introspection, not entertainment.
Those who arrive expecting a recreational experience usually find something very different and much deeper: an encounter with themselves.
Myth 2: «A single ceremony cures everything».»
The reality
No serious process promises guaranteed results, and neither does ours. Healing is not an automatic effect of medicine: it depends largely on each person's willingness, honesty and his or her own path.
What can be said is that those who go through the process rarely come out the same as when they entered. But this change is not a formula or a guarantee: it is a discovery that occurs within each person, at his or her own pace. That is why we speak of accompaniment, not cures.
Myth 3: «Anyone can take yagé at any time».»
The reality
Traditional medicine does not work like an open appointment. There is prior preparation, a health questionnaire and informed consent that are carefully reviewed before any ceremony. It is not about putting up barriers, but about taking care of the person.
There are health conditions, medical treatments and personal situations that require special attention or that make it inadvisable to take. That is why the accompaniment begins long before the ceremony: in the conversation, in the questions, in the listening.
Myth 4: «It is a dangerous and uncontrolled experience».»
The reality
Fear often comes from stories told out of context. In a serious space, the ceremony takes place in small groups, with permanent accompaniment and within a framework of integral care. Personalized attention is precisely what differentiates a responsible process from an improvised practice.
Care does not end when the night is over: it includes preparation beforehand, accompaniment during the process and follow-up afterwards, either in person or remotely.
Myth 5: «Yagé is only for people with serious problems».»
The reality
It is true that many people arrive after having exhausted other options or going through difficult times. But motivation does not have a unique form. There are those who come seeking clarity, those who seek to reconnect with themselves, and those who simply feel a calling that they can't quite explain.
As it is often said in the tradition: no one arrives by chance. And that call, whatever its origin, deserves respect.
So what really happens in a ceremony?
Beyond the myths, a yagé ceremony rests on some constant pillars:
- Prior preparation, including conversation, questionnaire and informed consent.
- A space of care, in small groups and with permanent accompaniment.
- An introspective process, focused on internal work and not on visual effects.
- A subsequent accompaniment, to integrate what has been experienced calmly.
The experience is different for each person, because it operates within, by and for each person. No two processes are the same.
An honest look at medicine
Approaching yagé with real information is the best way to do it with respect. We do not promise miraculous transformations or instant cures: we offer a path, a space and an accompaniment for those who feel it is time to follow it.
If after reading this you feel that the topic resonates with you, the most valuable thing you can do is to confidently ask questions and resolve your doubts before deciding anything.
